I want to become real chess player but dont know where to start?

I want to get involve in chess club, tournament, and some activity, but how can I start? I live in Texas in United State if this help, thanks.|||A list of chess clubs in Texas with links to their official websites:

Google to see if there are chess clubs in your place, look at news paper to see if there are chess club or tournament listings ask people people in your place. I heard that in New York there are many chess clubs.





If you have friends that does not know chess teach them, so you could have a playing buddies. Buy chess books like Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar and Winning Chess Strategy by Seirawan so you will improve your skills.|||Yea start but (obviously) playing, but check out the daily paper and learn the positions on the board.. Like a1 g4 you'll get it and soon you will be good|||That's really excellent advice from Alec. Just giving him a thumbs up was insufficient, so I am posting this too.
